With "Die Sistinische Madonna" (The Sistine Madonna), the Dresden art-rock band Electra released one of their best-known and most ambitious works in 1980. The album contains the eponymous, over 26-minute-long rock suite, inspired by Raphael's famous painting, as well as other tracks such as "Der Beobachter" (The Viewer) , "Scheidungstag" (Divorce Day), "Jahrmarkt " (Fair), and "Erinnerung" (Memory ). The blend of symphonic rock elements, sophisticated lyrics, and East German rock history makes this record a special collector's item from GDR music culture.
Band history:
Electra was founded in Dresden in 1969 and was one of the most important art rock and progressive rock bands in East Germany. With complex arrangements, classically inspired compositions, and poetic lyrics, the band secured a firm place in the East German music scene. "Sistine Madonna" is considered one of their masterpieces and is a prime example of the high artistic standards of East German rock music of that era.
