This LP , "Smokie," was released in 1979 on the East German label AMIGA and contains a selection of the British soft-rock band's most famous songs. With hits like "Living Next Door to Alice," "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone," and "If You Think You Know How to Love Me," the album combines all the qualities that made Smokie world-famous – melodic hooks, warm harmonies, and catchy rock-pop arrangements.
The AMIGA edition was one of the most popular Western import licenses in the Eastern Bloc and was a rare access to Western pop music for many East German listeners.
Historical background:
Smokie was formed in Bradford, England, in the mid-1970s and achieved international fame with their distinctive blend of soft rock and country influences. The band worked closely with songwriting duo Chinn & Chapman , who had previously produced glam rock giants like Sweet and Suzi Quatro. With their catchy mix of melancholy and radio-friendliness, Smokie had a lasting impact on the European pop sound of the 1970s.
