With their self-titled album Renft, the Klaus Renft Combo created one of the most important works in East German rock history in 1974. The record combines blues, folk, and rock with critical lyrics – a sound that was ahead of its time and became a symbol of musical protest in the GDR. Tracks like "Zwischen Liebe und Zorn" (Between Love and Anger) and "Gänselieschen" (Goose Girl) remain among the most influential songs in East German music to this day.
Historical background:
The Klaus Renft Combo , or Renft for short, was a cult phenomenon in East Germany. Because of their socially critical lyrics, the band was banned by the SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany) in 1975 – but their music outlasted the system. The album "Renft" is now a symbol of artistic freedom under political constraints and a sought-after collector's item for enthusiasts of authentic East German rock history.
